The well-prepared healthcare administrative assistant has options. Depending upon the facility, they may be involved in many areas: receptionist, filing, medical records, transcription, and medical manuscript typing, insurance, general secretarial duties such as correspondence, scheduling, bookkeeping, and ordering supplies. A healthcare administrative assistant can enter the field as a receptionist and work up to office manager or supervisor. A healthcare administrative assistant may also advance to an administrative assistant position for one or two physicians in which he/she is in complete charge of the entire office and all of its personnel. The U.S. Department of Labor has ranked medical administrative assistant/transcription jobs among the top 25 fastest growing jobs in their Occupational Outlook Handbook.

Medical transcriptionists are also in high demand. They must also have a good knowledge of medical terminology.

Employers for graduates of both programs include:

  • Medical clinic/doctor’s office/hospital
  • Chiropractic office/dental office
  • Health insurance company
  • Medical device manufacturing companies and research facilities
  • Independent transcriptionist (work from your own home)
